Expedia.com is an Internet-based travel agency, part of Expedia,
Inc. headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, USA. It books airline
tickets, hotel reservations, car rentals, cruises, vacation
packages, and various attractions and services via the World Wide
Web and telephone travel agents. The company serves customers in
Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands,
Norway, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States and
now, India and New Zealand. Founded as a division of Microsoft in
October 1996, Expedia was spun off in 1999, and was purchased by USA
Networks in 2001 (USA changed its name to InterActiveCorp in 2003). IAC spun off its travel group of
businesses under the Expedia name in August 2005, including Expedia,
Expedia Corporate Travel, TripAdvisor, Classic Vacations, eLong,
Hotels.com, and Hotwire.com. Expedia uses Sabre (computer system)
and Worldspan as their main Computer reservations systems, with
Pegasus and their own Canadian connectivity company for hotel direct
connects as an adjunct for hotels not listed in Worldspan. Expedia, Inc. (Expedia) is an online travel company. The Company has created a global travel marketplace used by a range of leisure and corporate travelers and offline retail travel agents, as well as travel service providers. It makes available travel products and services provided by airlines, lodging properties, car rental companies, destination service providers, cruise lines and other travel product and service companies. ExpediaGÇÖs portfolio of brands includes Expedia.com, Hotels.com, Hotwire.com, Worldwide Travel Exchange (WWTE) and Interactive Affiliate Network (IAN), Classic Vacations, Expedia Corporate Travel (ECT), eLong and TripAdvisor. In May 2007, the CompanyGÇÖs operating company, TripAdvisor, LLC, acquired four travel media businesses, which were Travel Media LLC (operator of smartertravel.com and bookingbuddy.com), SeatGuru.com, TravelPod.com and Travel-Library.com.
